    Prerequisite: ITL 211 or permission of instructor This course introduces students to the history and culture of the Italian peninsula from the prehistoric period to the present day. Through readings from designated texts, movie viewings, and presentations of cultural products, students will become familiar with and understand major periods of Italian history and culture. In addition, students will learn about the present day economic and social structure of Italy.

    Prerequisite: One 200-level course in Italian or its equivalent or permission of instructor This course provides students with an opportunity to improve their Italian by using it in an Italian speaking workplace (whether in the United States or abroad in an Italian speaking culture), in the context of a commercial enterprise, government agency, political office, non-profit agency, or other work environment in which Italian is spoken.

    Prerequisite: ITL 211 or one ITL 200-level course, or permission of instructor This course introduces students to major periods and figures of Italian literature. The course will cover eight centuries of Italian literature, from its origins to the present. Through selected readings, essays, and original texts, students will familiarize themselves with the main genres, ideas, and movements of Italian literature, and will be able to develop a critical understanding of the close link that exists between Italian literature and the society and culture it represents.

    Prerequisite: ITL 103 or placement into 200-level course This course is designed to provide intensive study of business Italian, basic vocabulary, and most often used professional expressions. Topical readings from manuals used in Italian business schools, as well as analyses of letters, office documents, and newspaper articles about the Italian business world will be included. The course helps students understand professional relationships, job searches, and the socio-economic environment of Italy. The course is open to students interested in economic issues, whether or not they have prior knowledge in this field.

    Prerequisite: ITL 216 or ITL 217, or permission of instructor This course offers a thorough study of the history of Italy since its unification in 1861. Historical events, social, economic, political issues, as well as ideas and movements that have characterized the different stages of the development of unified Italy will be approached from many different angles. By considering the different dimensions of historical development, students will gain an understanding of the relationship between history and its impact on the social, economic, and cultural reality of Italy.

    No prerequisites. This course offers a thorough study of the development of the Italian short story throughout seven centuries of Italian literature by analyzing specific exemplars of the genre. The works will be approached from the aesthetic, political, social, and cultural perspective. By focusing on the multiple dimensions of the narrative product, students will have the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the relationship between the literary works and the cultural background of the period under investigation.

    This course focuses on the Italian culture of the 20th century as portrayed in its most representative novels. It will provide a general overview of the evolution of literary, cultural, and philosophical movements through the two world wars, the rise and fall of the Fascist regime, and the post-war reconstruction of a neo-capitalistic society. Readings will include quintessential novels representative of this evolution.

    This course concentrates on the history of contemporary Italian cinema from Neorealism to the present. Students will view and analyze influential films and study the work of eminent filmmakers who contributed to the development of the Italian cinematic tradition. This course will present an in-depth overview of the development of social, political, and cultural aspects of Italian society through the post-World War II era, the economic boom of the sixties, the social turmoil of the seventies, the building of a post-industrial society in the eighties, and the issue of migration in the nineties. Readings will incorporate scholarly articles on the films and authors studied.

    This course proposes an interdisciplinary study of the Italian South since Unification. The selected works, historical essays, journalistic reports, sociological and anthropological studies, as well as literary, cinematic, and popular culture products will be approached from the aesthetic, political, social, and cultural angle. Students will develop a deep understanding of the relationship between the literary, cinematic, and popular culture and the perspectives of the history and culture under investigation and the relationships between geography, politics and economics that produced them.
