It prepares student for situations which may be encountered in German-speaking countries. Visual media are routinely incorporated to enhance instruction. Oral Proficiency Class is required. Students with four or more years of high school study in German will not receive credit for 101.

This course is an interdisciplinary survey course that does not require any knowledge of German. Students will learn about German culture, establish connections with other disciplines such as history, sociology, film studies, and literature, and gain a nuanced understanding of the social practices and expectations of native speakers of different varieties of German within their own speech communities. Students will develop and practice critical thinking skills in analyzing stereotypical ideas of people in German-speaking cultures. Students with German-language expertise may opt to take the course for LAC (Language Across the Curriculum) credit with readings and papers in German.

Prerequisite: GER 103 or placement in 200-level course This course improves the student's ability to speak, read, and write German using short stories, magazines, newspaper articles, and discussions of current trends in the cultures of Germanspeaking countries. Vocabulary-building and writing are emphasized, as well as a review and broadening of grammar. Oral Proficiency Classis required.

Prerequisite: GER 103 or placement in 200-level course This course provides an introduction to German literature through close readings of selected literary texts in German. Emphasis is given to the development of an active and passive vocabulary to arrive at a fuller understanding of a literary text. Genres analyzed in the course include novel, short story, drama, and poetry.

Prerequisite: GER 103 or placement in 200-level course This course provides an in-depth and comprehensive review of German grammar, focusing on the salient points of the language. It includes communicative activities through learner-generated exchanges of information, experiences, and opinions. Oral Proficiency Class is required.
