Prerequisites: Art Education major. A minimum of C is required in all major courses. This first course in the professional art education sequence is designed to introduce future art teachers to the importance of the visual arts in education through theory, practice, and field experiences. Students will begin to explore contemporary practices, issues, and trends in art education, and examine the characteristics and dispositions of quality art instruction in the K-12 schools. The course introduces critical areas of inquiry necessary to create a firm foundation in curriculum and pedagogy through readings, discussions, artmaking, assignments, presentations, and field experiences. Art classroom observations in the K-12 schools will be required and arranged by the STEP Office and course instructor.

Prerequisites: AAE 273 for Art Education majors, or any major within the School of Education with a dual major in Art. A minimum grade of C+ is required in all art education courses and a minimum grade of C is required in all other major courses. This second course in the professional art education sequence will introduce and discuss the theories and practical application of teaching art and visual culture in the elementary (K-5) school. Students will investigate curriculum planning, personal, social and artistic development, instructional strategies, as well as historical and contemporary issues in art education as they relate to the elementary school setting. Activities will include but are not limited to discussion, critical response activities, peer teaching, classroom research, the design of lessons and instructional materials appropriate for the teaching of art and visual culture in elementary school settings.

Prerequisites: AAE 273 and AAE 373. A minimum grade of C+ is required in all art education courses and a minimum grade of C is required in all other major courses. This third course in the professional art education sequence is designed to provide students with experiences and knowledge that will guide their future success as secondary (6-12) art educators. Examining contemporary issues, artists, and big ideas, this course examines theoretical, curricular, and pedagogical aspects relevant to secondary art education. Other topics of investigation include unit and lesson planning, assessment, art criticism, aesthetics, human development, special education, and effective teaching strategies in the secondary classroom. The course explores areas of inquiry necessary to create a firm foundation in art education through readings, discussions, in-class activities, films, peer teaching, artmaking and visual/written assignments.

Prerequisites: AAE 373 and AAE 374. A minimum grade of C+ is required in all art education courses and a minimum grade of C is required in all other major courses. This fourth course in the professional art education sequence is an advanced pedagogy course designed to provide students with teaching experiences and knowledge that will guide their future success as K-12 art educators. The course consists of weekly class meetings and field experiences at the elementary and secondary school level. The field experiences allow students to observe quality arts instruction in the schools, examine effective art curricula, collaborate with peers and cooperate with New Jersey art teachers Art (Art Education Courses)-2 in designing and implementing art lessons, and interact with and teach K-12 students. The field experiences will be arranged by the STEP Office and course instructor, and classroom observations will be conducted for each student in the field. Other important topics of inquiry including assessment, art criticism, classroom management, portfolios, budgets, social issues, politics, and special needs in the art classroom will be explored through readings, discussions, in-class activities, written assignments, personal reflections, and presentations.

1.00 - 8.00 Credits
(May not be taken as a substitute for any other course.) Prerequisite: Enrollment as an upper-division art education major; student must have taken a minimum of three courses in the major area. Preregistration with signed approval of an art education faculty sponsor and department chair. For advanced work only. This individually-focused, self-guided course requires work under supervision of faculty advisor. It is an opportunity to develop personal interests within the major field. May be repeated.

Prerequisites: AAE 375. A minimum grade of C+ is required in all art education courses and a minimum grade of C is required in all other major courses. The Praxis II Art: Content Test is required for student teaching. A GPA of 3.00 is required for graduation and teacher certification. Reserved for Art Education majors. Co-requisite: AAE 490 This is the fifth course in the professional art education sequence, and must be taken concurrently with AAE 492. This course is a semester-long student teaching experience reserved for art education seniors. Students will spend half the semester teaching fulltime at the elementary level and the other half at the secondary level. This teaching opportunity focuses on observation, participation and responsible teaching under direct supervision of college supervisors and K-12 cooperating teachers. Field experiences will be arranged by the STEP Office.

Prerequisite: AAE 375 with a minimum grade of a B. A minimum grade of C+ is required in all art education courses and a minimum grade of C is required in all other major courses. Co-requisite: AAE 490 This is the sixth, and final course in the professional art education sequence, and must be taken concurrently with AAE 490. The weekly Student Teaching Seminar is intended to help pre-service teachers reflect upon their field experiences, and share questions and concerns that arise in the field. The course will enhance an awareness of the curricular and pedagogical issues that impact art teachers and art education in the contemporary K- 12 school. The course serves to link the student teaching experience with the theoretical frameworks studied in previous art education classes, as well as studio and art history classes. The culminating project of the course is a comprehensive teaching portfolio.

An introduction to the history of art through the examination of major monuments of architecture, painting, sculpture, and minor arts in the European tradition from prehistoric times to the beginning of the Renaissance. Emphasis is placed on art created for or by the dominant cultural centers of civilizations falling within this timeframe.
