Offers the basic principles of journalism. While developing an awareness of news values, journalistic style and story types, students practice composing and editing a variety of stories on personal computers and learn to adhere to the accepted standards of professional ethics and responsibility. Is available to a limited number of qualified students interested in demonstrating competence in a communications media career. Students work nine hours per week in a community broadcast or publications medium, either on-site or on-assignment, and are supervised by a responsible member of the medium's staff, as well as by the SCC journalism instructor. Strengthens students' fundamental skills in reading and writing. Standard English usage and correct mechanics are emphasized along with practice in identifying main ideas, supporting details and organizational patterns. Students read extensively and write thoughtfully, responding to topics of general or popular interest. Successful completion of this course allows students to proceed to ENG 98.
