Is designed to augment the newly licensed practical nurse's basic knowledge and skills with professional concepts and skills required of a registered nurse. The nursing process is used throughout to enhance the student's knowledge of assessment and the accompanying skills that reflect professional practice. Nursing care plans with teaching plans are developed to enhance critical thinking. The realm of the registered professional nurse is provided through theoretical and clinical lab content. The LPN student identifies appropriate nursing responses to the client's self-care deficits by utilizing Dorothea Orem's Nursing Theory. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible for the Associate Degree in Nursing Program for LPNs. Prerequisites: Successful completion of the NCLEX-PN and proof of current license. Licensure requirement may be waived by the instructor to enroll in the course; however, licensure is required to take the course for credit. Offered: Spring, Summer

Prepares the student to care for groups of clients (psychiatric, pediatric and obstetric) whose health is influenced by diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, cultural, physical and environmental factors within the community. The nursing process is used throughout to enhance the student's knowledge of assessment and the accompanying skills that reflect professional practice. The student will identify appropriate nursing plans of care in response to the client's self-care deficits by utilizing Orem's System Theory of wholly compensatory, partly compensatory, or supportive educative system. Preventative strategies based on the health trends and goals of Healthy People 2010 are implemented. Emphasis is placed on concepts of comprehensive healthcare. Nursing care of clients with selected physiologic health deviations in traumatic injury and critical care will be addressed. Provides a comprehensive review of the latest test plan for the NCLEX-RN for new graduate nurses and for those who need extra help with passing the licensing exam. The course is comprised of content review encompassing all body systems, pediatrics, maternity, psychiatric disorders, legal issues, cultural issues, pharmacology and the nursing process. Prepares licensed and registered nurses to work in an operating room. The didactic content is centered around 26 modules including topics in anesthesia, asepsis, assessment, medications, surgical procedures and innovations, wound healing, instrumentation, scrubbing, gowning and gloving. For the registered nurse, this course also includes circulation. Students receive handouts, reading assignments, videos to view, guidelines for preceptors, posttests, a bibliography and a final examination. The lab content simulates procedures performed in an operating room. Students must have hospital sponsors to participate. Offered: Varies

Offers an overview of the western philosophic tradition, including topics such as logic, metaphysics, epistemology, theology, ethics, freedom and justice. Students examine recognized philosophers' classic theories, explanations and arguments relating to each topic. Students are encouraged to analyze and critique each philosopher's position. Emphasis is placed on examining one'sown views, confronting alternative views and developing an understanding of one's own beliefs and of their relationship to the world.
