  • 1.00 Credits

Is designed for college students who need a brief review of basic numerical processes with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents and their applications. Upon completion of this one-week course, students retake the Accuplacer test in arithmetic in an attempt to test out of MA 90. (Credit does not apply toward graduation.) Prerequisite: College Placement Test Offered: Summer
  • 1.00 Credits

Is for students who need a brief review of elementary algebra. This course is a rapid review of algebra covering mathematical symbols and operations in order to formulate and solve first- and second-degree equations, graphs of equations and systems of equations, polynomials, rational expressions and radicals. Upon completion of this one-week course, students retake the algebra portion of the Accuplacer test in an attempt to test out of MA 93. (Credit does not apply toward graduation.) Prerequisite: College Placement Test Offered: Summer
  • 4.00 Credits

Provides students with the concepts and skills necessary for further study in Elementary Algebra, or in a general education mathematics course, Applied Mathematics, or in Fundamentals of Mathematics for Nursing. Topics include the four basic arithmetic operations as applied to whole numbers, fractions, decimals, metric conversions and rational problem solving. The concepts and skills of MA 90 are introduced through lecture and individualized instruction, utilizing computerized, programmed materials. (Credits do not apply toward graduation.) Prerequisite: College Placement Test Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
  • 4.00 Credits

Provides the basic algebraic concepts and skills necessary to meet the prerequisites for college-level mathematics courses. Major topics include functions, linear equations and properties of lines, systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, factoring, rational expressions and quadratic equations. Concepts and skills are introduced by lecture and individualized instruction. Students use a graphing calculator. (Credits do not apply toward graduation.) Prerequisite: College Placement Test or completion of MA 90 Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
  • 4.00 Credits

Provides a smooth transition from basic algebra skills developed in MA 93, to the more abstract skills and reasoning abilities necessary for success in College Algebra. Students investigate algebra both analytically and graphically. Topics include functions, linear equations and inequalities, properties of lines, systems of equations, exponents and polynomials, factoring, rational expressions, radical expressions and quadratic equations. Methods of instruction include lecture, group discussion, and graphical analysis on both the graphing calculator and computer. The weekly labs focus on the topics of the week and may consist of a challenging problem set that students works on collaboratively, a graphing calculator investigation, or a computer experiment where students investigate mathematics in an applied mode. Prerequisite: College Placement Test or MA 93 Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
  • 3.00 Credits

Enables students to develop an appreciation of mathematics and an awareness of how it is used today. The course investigates transformational geometry, statistics and discrete mathematical models (graph theory). In addition, the instructor may choose from the following topics: voting theory, fair division, apportionment, fractal geometry and real numbers as related to continuous mathematics. Prerequisite: College Placement Test, MA 93 or written permission of Assistant Dean of Academic Services Offered: Fall, Spring
  • 3.00 Credits

Enables students to become proficient in analyzing linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions. Students also learn to solve both linear and nonlinear systems, and investigate topics both analytically and graphically. Methods of instruction include lecture, group discussion, and graphical analysis on both the graphing calculator and the computer. The lab structure is one of the following: a challenging problem-set that students work on collaboratively, a graphing-calculator investigation or a computer experiment in which students investigate mathematics in an applied mode. Placement in the course is secured by a score of 25 or higher on the Intermediate Algebra skill test, administered by Student Services before the first day of class. Prerequisite: College Placement Test, MA 95 or written permission of Assistant Dean of Academic Services Offered: Fall, Spring
  • 4.00 Credits

Prepares students for the study of Calculus. This course reviews algebraic techniques and enables students to become proficient in analyzing linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic and trigonometric functions. Students are required to have a TI-83, TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator. Prerequisites: Assessment Test, MA 95 or written permission of instructor Offered: Fall, Spring
  • 3.00 Credits

Teaches basic statistical methods with an emphasis on business applications. The principles of both descriptive and inferential statistics are taught, with topics including the normal distribution, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, analysis of variance and probability theory. Prerequisites: CS 115; MA 95 or MAT 134 or written permission of Assistant Dean of Academic Services Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
  • 4.00 Credits

Is designed for students who need a calculus background for their major area of study, future career or as preparation for higher levels of mathematics. Topics include functions and graphs, limits, continuity, the derivative of algebraic functions, curve sketching, related rates, maxima and minima, Rolle's Theorem, the Mean Value Theorem, integration and applications of the definite integral. A TI-83 Plus graphing calculator is required. Prerequisite: MAT 153 Offered: Fall
