Course investigates changing concepts of the hero in medieval Spain as manifested in types that range from the warrior of the epic, to the saint of the hagiographic narrative, to the knight-errant of romance. Hybrid types, such as the intellectual hero of the [Libro de Apolonio] poet, are also studied. .

The nature, definitions, and politics of ethnicity -and ethnography-in the history and fiction of Early Modern Spain reveal intricate and shifting parameters. A variety of texts from the Old World and the New, are read in conjunction with such theorists as Badiou and Ricoeur. Critics including González EchevarrÃa, Mignolo and Pratt serve as the focus of the discussions. Readings include works by Inca Garcilaso, Guamán Poma, Antonio de Guevara, Antonio de Torquemada, Miguel de Luna, Lope de Vega, and Cervantes.

The course will explore how the Spanish II Republic and the Civil War have been narrated, remembered and revised in historiography, prose fiction, poetry, film, journalism and other cultural venues throughout the decades and the generations. Special attention will be paid to the history of memory and to the "memorization" of history; to the politics of memory, but also to aspects of memory that challenge conventional political assumptions about history and memory.

This seminar will center on the discussion of theories on the origin and history of the genre in Latin America. Positions and definitions by novelists will be the base of our inquiry. The point of departure for a general debate on the tradition of genre will be the novels and critical essays by José MarÃa Arguedas, Alejo Carpentier y Macedonio Fernández.

An exploration of the rise of new media in post-Revolutionary Mexico, with special attention to the new technologies of communication - radio, photography, phonography, and film - and their impact on art and literature. Course provides an in-depth analysis of photographers Tina Modotti and Manuel Alvarez Bravo; writers Salvador Novo, Octavio Paz, and Manuel Maples Arce; and the cultural program of José Vasconcelos.

Departing from a brief review of central concepts about the "barroco de Indias," this course explores the idea of the neobaroque (up to the neobarroso) in Latin America as an aesthetic, historical, political, and philosophical idea; themes include poetics, desire, fetish, coloniality, empire, and philosophies of history. Authors may include Carpentier, Lezama Lima, Haroldo de Campos, Cabrera Infante, Sarduy, Perlongher, Irlemar Chiampi, Benjamin, Lacan, Deleuze, Marx. Readings in Spanish, English, Portuguese.

Continuation of SWA 101. Emphasis is on increasing proficiency in reading and listening comprehension, speaking, and writing activities in Swahili. Cultural contexts of the East African societies where Swahili is spoken are incorporated in classroom activities in order to enhance communication and cultural proficiency.

The course aims at consolidating basic language skills learned in the previous elementary courses in enabling the learner perform daily communicative activities in Kiswahili with relative ease. The course content includes introduction to simple creative texts such as video, music, short stories, and visuals in newspapers and magazines that increase the learner's exposure to and appreciation for the cultural practices of the Swahili speakers.
