LAT 204: Readings in Latin Literature - After Vergil: Transformation and Tradition in Latin Epic
0.00 - 4.00 Credits
Princeton University
This course introduces students to the epic poems written under the reigns of Nero and the Flavian emperors, while further developing their skills and experience in reading Latin. We will explore how and why these poets allude to the works of their predecessors, especially the [Aeneid]. The syllabus focuses on "typical" scenes and elements in epic poetry: visits to the underworld, descriptions of works of art, accounts of single combat. In each case we will compare how different authors, including Ovid, Lucan, Statius, and the epic poets of the Middle Ages and Renaissance adapt these aspects of the epic tradition.
