    This course will present the theories and prin-ciples underlying nursing care of patients with alterations in mental health. Students conduct psychosocial assessments, develop an evi-dence-based nursing plan of care, develop a higher level of skill in therapeutic communica-tion, intervention strategies, and evaluate achievement of outcomes for individuals, families, and groups across the lifespan. Pri-mary prevention, crisis intervention, and fami-ly and community concerns related to sub-stance abuse, the dual-diagnosis patient, do-mestic violence and other mental illness will be discussed. Students examine systems in which mental health care is provided and the availability of relevant resources. Ethical and legal are integrated throughout the course. Clinical experiences will take place in a variety of inpatient and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 260, NURS 250, NURS 350 Corequisite: NURS 300

    This course provides the foundation for pro-fessional nursing practice by introducing learners to the history, theory, concepts, and processes essential to the development of pro-fessional behaviors. Selected philosophies and theories of nursing are introduced and dis-cussed. Socialization into the professional role is studied and selected psychosocial concepts are discussed within a self-care framework.

    This course is designed to present the know-ledge of pharmacology as utilized in current nursing practice. The content focuses on the pharmacologic classifications of drugs, their physiologic impact, monitoring for therapeu-tic responses, side effects, adverse reactions, drug interactions, toxicity, patient-teaching responsibilities and nursing implications. Em-phasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process and the role of the nurse when caring for patients receiving drugs.     This course is designed to further develop the student's ability to critically think as it applies to nursing care of the adult/geriatric client with acute and/or chronic illness. Principles of teaching/learning, health promotion, diag-nosis, disease prevention, economic, social and cultural beliefs are integrated in the de-velopment of evidence based practice plans of care. The nursing process is utilized in caring for the adult client in a variety of settings to ensure safe, comprehensive, and collaborative nursing care.     The primary focus of this course will be on the nursing care of the childbearing client in the framework of the developing family. Course content will include the factors that influence conception, growth, and develop-ment of the fetus, pregnancy and birth, and a variety of women's reproductive health issues from menarche to menopause. Students will also be exposed commonly occurring male reproductive health issues. Students will dis-cuss the effects that culture, society, technolo-gy, public policy, and economics have on childbearing and reproductive health of wom-en and families. Students will examine the availability of relevant community resources to the childbearing family, and the ethical and legal concerns associated with childbearing. High-risk situations and issues related to childbearing related to pregnancy and birth are addressed. Prerequisites: NURS 300, NURS 320, NURS 450 Corequisites: NURS 360, NURS 380

    The student examines personal and profes-sional values, in relation to ethical and legal issues, occurring in the practice of profession-al nursing. Using legal concepts and profes-sional ethical codes, the student will build upon knowledge from previous courses to explore the ethical and legal problems en-countered in nursing care throughout the li-fespan. Sociocultural influences on ethical and legal concepts are explored. Prerequisites: NURS 300, NURS 320, NURS 450 Corequisites: NURS 370, NURS 360: Nursing of Adults II

    Major theories and principles of education for clients and healthcare professionals are ex-plored within this course. Principles of teach-ing/learning along with interventions and strategies for health education are identified and practiced. Formation of a teaching phi-losophy is developed by incorporating values, self-analysis, and professional growth. Regis-tered professional nurse students develop health presentations for selected populations using educational technology. Creation of a teaching portfolio is explored. Understanding culture and lifespan issues in relationship to health promotion, education, and mainten-ance are also explored.

    The focus of this course is community health nursing with a transcultural nursing frame-work. Community health is viewed from the perspective of the community as client, and the student examines problems of health dis-parities and other factors affecting popula-tions at risk.     This course focuses on the unique health and developmental needs of infants, children and adolescents. Students will develop an evi-dence-based nursing plan of care, emphasiz-ing family-centered care that incorporates screening, teaching, health promotion, pre-vention and counseling. The student will use the nursing process and evidence-based prac-tice to provide comprehensive health care to children in acute care and community settings. Additional observational opportunities in well baby clinics, day care centers and other com-munity-based agencies for childrearing fami-lies are accessed to enhance student learning experiences. Prerequisites: NURS 360, NURS 370, NURS 380 Corequisite: NURS 430
