This course acquaints the student with both prose and poetry written by African-Americans as an integral part of the American literary tradition. Beginning with mythical, symbolic, and oral traditions in Africa, the course will explore their influence on African-American literature from 1750 to the present, with a particular focus on 20th century litera-ture. With instructor's approval, a student may ar-range to pursue a course of study in a specific area of literature or communications. The course involves tutorial meetings with the in-structor, independent readings, and an in-depth research project. Normally restricted to juniors or seniors, this course may be taken when a schedule conflict precludes taking a scheduled literature elective.
