ED 360: Behavior Management Strategies for Inclusive and Self-Contained Classrooms

This course is taken in a student's junior year. It teaches future special education teachers to create effective learning environments for students with varying levels of skill using the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Included will be how to teach academic skills, social skills, fine-motor skills, skills in independence and self-help, on-task behavior, prosocial behavior, etc. Students will learn the application of ABA as an overall management system that can be individualized to the needs of each student, regardless of their skill level. Prerequisites: ED 340 or ED 348, ED 331, ED 351. Field requirement (40 hours).

The course will focus on the knowledge and skills needed for successful collaboration and transition planning among special and regular educators, parents, and other service providers to meet the educational goals of children with special needs. The course will explore the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the role of the educational team, what it means to collaborate, issues of collaboration in the context of inclusion, and typical forms of collaboration that exist in schools.
