This U.S. History course studies the Twentieth century experience of American women, who have often been neglected in traditional political and diplomatic histories. Women's contributions to public life will be examined, as will the contributions and experiences of women who remained exclusively within the family. Women's struggle for the vote and for political, legal and economic rights will be considered, along with changing values, Freudian psychology, domestic architecture and other influences on women's lives. The course will deal with such topics as immigration, labor, economic change, and education. While the course will begin with a textbook in women's history, students will be encouraged to choose their own topics for original research. Prerequisite: Reading Proficiency.
