This course will be dedicated to the study of contemporary Spanish culture. Through the critical examination and analysis of prominent Spanish films produced during the Dictatorship (1939-1975) and the Democracy we will analyze notions related to the complex formation process of the individual and national identity, paying special attention to cultural and political aspects. Prerequisites: SPA 230 and 235, or permission of instructor. Fall as needed

This course will give students the basic knowledge about Hispanic women writers from various countries and time periods. We will read different literary genres (narrative, theatre, poetry) and discuss numerous themes and issues tackled by these writers. All discussions, readings, participation, homework, written papers and presentations will be in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPA 230 and 235, or permission of instructor. Fall as needed

The objective of this course is to explore the history, culture and experience of the Hispanic Caribbean by means of various artistic and literary genres,. At the same time a series of concepts and techniques will be used to augment the esthetic appreciation, bibliographic knowledge and cultural and linguistic command of the student. We will investigate the concept of "caribe?idad" within the framework of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and its repercussions in the United States, Hispanic America and Spain. Prerequisites: SPA 230 and 235 or permission of instructor. Spring as needed
