This course provides opportunities to develop an understanding of the content of middle school mathematics programs and formulate a teaching methodology for the meaningful learning of mathematics by middle school students. Students are challenged to reflect on their personal views of mathematics, on how middle school children learn mathematics, and on classroom environments that help middle school children understand mathematics. Teaching from a problem-solving perspective and making communication, reasoning, and connections the primary foci of mathematics learning are central.
