A study and directed application of the fundamentals of jazz improvisation including basic chord and scale construction and recognition, harmonic function, chord-scale relationships and basic blues and popular song forms. All students will be required to develop aural and performance skills relative to those theory skills. Original music composition with digital and analogue synthesizers and computers. Creation of sound scores for concert performance, film, video, dance, theatre, or art installations. Includes the investigation of various types of sound synthesis, as well as the operation of studio sound mixers and multi-track recorders. In addition to the weekly seminar, the student will be assigned a number of hours weekly for independent work in the studio for the realization of the project, which will receive periodic guidance and criticism from the instructor.
