This course is a survey of late 19th and 20th century Continental European Philosophies. The Continental tradition is philosophy can be said to have been founded by Husserl and Heidegger. It embraces the thinkers Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Lukacs, Gadamer, Habermas and Foucault, among others. Because many practicing philosophers today identify themselves as either in the continental or analytic traditions, it is important that students be introduced to both.
