The course covers the pre-Islamic Middle East including the conflict between the Eastern Roman and Sasanian empires and focuses on the development of an Islamic civilization that spread throughout the Middle East, North Africa and into Spain under the rule of the two most important Islamic dynasties of this period, the Umayyads and the Abbasids. Relations with neighboring regions including Europe are highlighted including the crusades which began in the late eleventh century and continued in Syria/Palestine through the 13th century. Spring.
