    Language Use courses provide students with a functional understanding of the grammar necessary for oral communication. Students learn to analyze authentic language use and then apply principles of oral grammar in producing more natural speech. This course emphasizes the functional use of more complex grammatical speech elements including linking, consonant clusters, sentence intonation, and thought groups. Through the study of authentic language use materials, students also learn to identify and use a variety of frequently used idioms and complex formulaic expressions.

    Reading and writing courses advance student ability to communicate through written English in academic settings, and a variety of contexts. This course transitions students to a study of academic texts and materials. Students further develop their understanding of the writing process by learning rhetorical patterns of writing, and basic research skills. Students are also introduced to American standards of academic integrity by studying plagiarism, reference/citation, and summary writing.

    Grammar courses develop student understanding of the grammar necessary for reading and writing. This course reviews the content of previous levels before transitions to an analytical approach of studying grammatical structures in discourse. Specific topics covered include passive/active voice, person, articles and determiners, as well as adjective and adverb clauses and reductions.

    Conversation courses prepare students for comprehension and production of English in academic and social settings. This course further develops student ability to summarize and take notes in academic classroom settings. Further, this level of conversation introduces students to the study of gesture and non-verbal communication.

Grammatical elements of study include speech acts such as apologizing, interrupting, complementing, and questioning.

This course emphasizes the development of strong theses, arguments, topic sentences, and supportive detail in writing. Students are asked to demonstrate the ability to synthesize multiple perspectives and ideas in writing, and practice American conventions of citation and reference.

    Grammar courses develop student understanding of the grammar necessary for reading and writing. This course functions in tandem with the Reading and Writing course to identify key grammatical challenges in writing production, and then learn to evaluate the meaning, function, and use of identified constructs. Students learn to identify and implement academic constructs, phrases, and practices in their writing.

    English Applications courses allow the student to concentrate their study on the content and language within specific academic disciplines. This course will emphasize the analysis of academic texts, lectures, and the development of note-taking and in-class communicative skills. Students will be required to observe lectures in general education courses, and then evaluate their learning experience.

    Conversation courses prepare students for comprehension and production of English in academic and social settings. This course further develops student ability to summarize, paraphrase, and restate academic oral interactions and improve note-taking strategies. Additionally, students engage in a variety of oral interactions, and learn to use academic grammar, vocabulary, and discourse in communicating.

Students learn to analyze authentic language use and then apply principles of oral grammar in producing more natural speech. This course emphasizes higher thinking and production in the target language, with great emphasis placed on the comprehension and production of metaphor. By the end of this course, students should be able to confidently interact with American peers in social and academic settings.
