Unfortunately, wars and conflicts are an endemic and recurring feature of international politics. Belying the expectation of the enthusiats of globalization and economic interdependence, fissures that trigger several forms of organized violence between and within states seem to reappear with alarming regularity. Considerable scholoarship has been deveoted to understanderstanding why wars occur, why some belligerents prevail over others and to explain the design of settlements that warring states and domestic groups forge to make peace. This course is intended for advanced undergraduates to help them survey this field of study in a systematic manner. Expertise in this area will be extremely attractive to future employers whether in the governmental sector, international organizations, media or non-profit institutions. This is also a great opportunity for those with ambition to go to graduate school as students will become highly proficient in critically analyzing and consuming research. Upon completion, students would also demonstrate familiarity with the publicly avalailable datasets on various determinants of war and conflict like the correlates of war (COW) and analyze availlable conflict and war data with the statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS).
