This course offers an in-depth look at the history and literature of brass ensembles including the British brass band, American Civil War era brass bands and the modern brass choir. Repertoire will include quintets, large ensemble and mixed ensembles including brass, percussion, and organ. Sacred literature for brass & vocal soloists and ensembles will be explored. Performance tour is required. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.

This course is an historical and aesthetic study of western art music that emphasizes learning to listen.Representative masterworks are studied and consideration is given to aesthetic functions and values.Preparing for and attending live concerts are essential parts of the course.An additional course fee is required.

This course focuses on the impact of the African American genre of music known as blues on popular music as it developed in North America and Britain during the 1960s and 1970s.The student is expected to acquire a comfortable familiarity with the course content.Activities include lectures, readings, watching DVDs, listening to CDs, live in-class performances, and writing.(This course may be taken for credit as FINA 104.)
