3 hours Advanced level composition, with both writing and reading based upon approaches in traditional and modern rhetoric and upon contemporary issues in sociolinguistics, argument, and semantics.

3 hours A close study of the characteristics of language and language diversity, including semantics, the description of sound systems (phonetics and phonology), grammatical structures (morphology and syntax), dialects of English, and the history of the English language. Prerequisite: EN301 or consent of instructor.

4 hours Intensive study of many of the plays and poems, with emphasis on the theatrical, historical, and critical contexts, to show the range and depth of Shakespeare's works. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.

3 hours An introductory course in the theory and practice of writing poetry and short fiction, along with reading of exemplary works of modern poetry and fiction. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent and any literature course (or consent of the instructor).

3 hours A study of the representative American and Canadian writers of the Plains, with emphasis upon the immigrant experience, the historical and cultural development of the region, and written responses to the land. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.

4 hours A study of selected novels of eighteenth through twentieth century America with emphasis upon the evolution of the genre, along with the aesthetics and the social and historical issues addressed within individual works. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.

3 hours A study of contemporary critical approaches and methods as applied to selected works of British and American literature. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.

This course is a continuation of College Writing which includes additional instruction and practice in the writing process; continued emphasis on writing correct, coherent, and fluent prose; and additional practice in the use of rhetorical modes. Writing assignments focus on analyzing, evaluating, and responding to published writings and on developing resource-based essays.

This course is an introduction to the study of poetry, drama, and fiction and an exploration of the diversity of literary expression. Students study the elements of each of the primary genres and examine their interrelationships and functioning in particular works.In the course a wide range of writings are studied, including those by women and men, those representative of diverse literary traditions (including British, American, European, and non-Western), and those reflecting a variety of American ethnic and racial backgrounds.(Enrollment is limited to 16 students with preference to those preparing to teach in elementary, middle, or secondary school.)
