An introduction to the varied histories of Islam and Muslims in Sub-Saharan Africa from about the 10th century to the post-colonial age. Focus is on West Africa and secondarily on the Nilotic Sudan and the Swahili coast. Both long-term processes and case studies will be examined to understand how religious, social, political and cultural forces have shaped and reshaped African Muslim communities and their traditions through time and space.
