An introduction to photographic-based printmaking processes such as cyanotype, polymer photogravure, and photo-stencil silkscreen. Emphasis is on the technical and aesthetic mastery of these media for the development of the student's creative visual work. Cross-listed with PHO 368. Offered fall semester.

This hands-on and computer-based studio course combines traditional approaches to sculpture fabrication (welding, woodworking, sewing, and found object assemblage) with digital fabrication tools, including 3D modeling, 3D scanning, CNC machining, and laser cutting. Open to all students. Previous experience with 3D modeling and/or three-dimensional studio coursework is desirable. Offered winter semester.

This hands-on and computer-based studio course utilizes digital modeling and prototyping techniques alongside foundry processes. 3D modeling, scanning, printing, and machining are used for problem-solving and generating forms to be cast in wax, bronze, and/or glass. Open to all students. Previous experience with 3D modeling and/or three-dimensional studio coursework desirable. Offered fall semester.

This primarily hands-on studio course emphasizes material knowledge in relation to functionality, form, and design fundamentals utilized in product development. Material explorations may include metalworking, woodworking, mold making, plastics, fibers, found objects and/or digital processes. Individual and collaborative projects will be informed by student research, experimentation, problem solving, and discussion. Part of the Information, Innovation, and Technology Issue. Students will learn ceramic-making processes, including hand-building, wheel throwing, slip casting, and other processes not covered in ART 275. Students will strengthen their technical skills by combining a diverse range of ceramic-making processes. Students will be encouraged to further research and develop their own areas of interest. Offered winter semester. Prerequisite: ART 275.

Students will learn about clay as applied to visual media arts, based on their individual interests. Students will explore extended ceramics techniques and strengthen their forming methods, surface design, decoration skills, and improve their understanding and practice of high/low-fire glazing, under/overglazing, and firing. Students will develop a portfolio about a concept of interest that supports ideas and/or processes developed in previous ceramics courses. Students will conduct research and identify conceptually important influences and artists. Students will learn about the origins and properties of raw materials and clay and glaze calculations, and different firing processes. This course introduces ceramic materials such as clay bodies/glazes at various temperatures. Students will recognize, analyze, and compare basic clay bodies and glaze components in raw and fired forms. Offered fall semesters. Prerequisite: ART 275.
