This course will focus on the basics of illustration, including an introduction to process and ideation, visual problem-solving techniques, and professional practices. Students will research and learn about different markets within illustration, as well as historical and contemporary illustrators. Prerequisite: Studio art and art education majors only.

An introduction to materials, processes, and techniques of illustration as a means of creative expression and critical inquiry. Students will learn digital and traditional illustrative methods through demonstrations, examples, and lectures. Students will develop a better understanding of the physical and technical aspects of image-making and its specific application to illustration. Image studio explores the creation, use, and presentation of images and the theoretical discourse specific to such practices within a studio context. The studio incorporates uses of current image creation and presentation technologies. May be repeated once for credit. Offered fall semester.

Space Studio addresses the creation of site-specific works based in the primary form and experience of space typically referred to as installations. It includes studio considerations of space, site, installation, public art, presentational practices, and the related theoretical discourse within a studio context. May be repeated once for credit. Offered winter semester.

Time Studio explores temporal and presentational practices and the theoretical discourse specific to such practices within a studio context. Time-based works include time and change as central elements. This includes ephemeral and kinetic objects, performance, sound works, and works incorporating moving images. This course is an in-depth exploration into the methods of commercial printing and corresponding software packages. This course will aid students in understanding how to manipulate digital technology and conventional printing techniques to their advantage, to increase the quality of their work utilizing this knowledge. This advanced studio immerses students in design problems that investigate complex typographic systems across digital and physical spaces. Students will engage with advanced hierarchy management and grid usage. Emphasis will be placed on projects that encompass printed, digital, and motion-based work. Offered fall semester. An advanced course to acquaint students with professional and technological components of creating and publishing interactive and motion programs. Includes an in-depth exploration of website design including interactivity, navigational systems, motion and typography, integrating both design methodologies and information architecture. This course introduces students to spatially oriented graphic design. Students will engage in developing projects that may include surface graphics, experimental technologies and display modes, packaging, and wayfinding systems.
