Students will evaluate communication and internet technologies and common software applications. Prerequisite(s): HIM-175, HIM-195.

Learn to code diseases and operations according tot he International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification; covers coding of all major body systems, with an emphasis on Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), including computerized encoder. Prerequisite(s): HIM-180, HIM-190 or instructor's permission.

Continued study of health record systems for psychiatric, long-term care, home health care hospice, including coding compliance licensure and accreditation standards. Prerequisite(s): HIM-220, HIM-170

In-depth study of healthcare data requirements, including JCAHO standards, governmental regulations, corporate compliance and HIPAA applications in acute care settings.. Prerequisite(s): HIM 180, CU 105, CU 110, or instructor permission.

Practical experience performing health information duties in seminar and in local health facilities to give the student the opportunity to actively perform technical duties. Total of 120 hours per quarter on-site in hospitals. Prerequisite(s): HIM-220, HIM-230, HIM-241, HIT-216 or concurrent enrollment and instructor permission.

Practical experience performing health information management functions in seminar and local healthcare facilities to give the student the opportunity to actively perform technical skills. 60 hours total on-site in specialized healthcare facilities and/or special projects. Prerequisite(s): HIM-190, HIM-222, or concurrent enrollment, or instructor permission.

Work internships for the Medical Billing Specialist program provide students the opportunity to apply their training and skills. Students spend a total of 90 hours in supervised practical experiences in health care facilities. Internship should be the culmination of course work. Students must provide their own transportation. Prerequisite(s): Instructor permission required.

Study and practical application of the purpose, organization, and function of continuous quality improvement, utilization management, standards for hospital accreditation and licensure, and calculation and presentation of statistical data. This course addresses the role of the Joint Commission, Government agencies, and the United States Vital and Public Health Statistic. Prerequisite(s): HIM-125, HIM-145.

Development of management, surpervision and leadership skills, including planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. Special emphasis in systems management. Prerequisite(s): HIM-230 or instructor permission.

An intermediate coding course applying both ICD-9-CM and CPT instruction on the more difficult sectionso f the coding systems. Extensive advanced practice using coding exercises and abstracted medical records in a virtual environment. Prerequisite(s): HIM-180, HIM-200, HIM-220, HIM-170 or instructor's permission.
