MUSC 341: Art Song
3.00 Credits
Randolph-Macon College
While it can be argued that any tune with a text represents an art song, this course will take a narrower approach and focus on the genre that emerged in Europe in the early nineteenth century and blossomed in the works of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, Debussy, Ives and others. Art songs consist of poems set to music and are designed for a solo singer and instrumental accompaniment. These intense, musical miniatures emerge from a central artistic challenge that has inspired composers for centuries: how does one write music for a pre-existing poem? What does the music do that the poetry does not? In this course, students will have the opportunity to listen to and perform art songs, attend concerts, and engage in musical analysis. Prerequisite: MUSC 210 or permission of the instructor. Three hours. Mr. Doering.
