3 credits. This course aims at introducing students to the spirit and lesson of the Humanism movement. Lectures, seminars and readings are meant to help students develop a sense of the historical tradition, and at the same time understand the importance of studia humanitatis. Humanism is a passage from an age of heroes and knights to an age of bourgeois society, from faith and authority to free reason and enterprise, from asceticism and symbolism to the study of nature, from a God-centered world to a human-centered one. Taught in English.
