It explores the secession crisis, the revolution in firepower that forced changes in battlefield tactics and war aims, and the development of "hard war." In studying long-distance trade, pilgrimages, voyages of exploration and discovery, and even tourism, we will look at the logistics of travel, attempts to map the world, and the difficulties people had in interpreting what they found.
