Prepares students for entry-level coding positions using the 3-volume ICD-9-CM. Application is made on the computer with various automated coding systems presently used by various health agencies.

A coordinated period of supervised experience in agencies that will offer students an opportunity to perform a variety of procedures and develop technical competence in their area of specialization.

Uses a microcomputer loaded with WordPerfect to provide instruc- tion in word processing concepts. All basic test editing functions are included as well as merge, math, spell check, sort, etc. Projects which require the use of automated features of the word processing program will be used.

Emphasis on document production, statistical reports, and further improvement of keyboarding speed and accuracy. Specialized material (administrative, legal, medical) is used depending on the option in which the student is enrolled.

Prepares the student to combine word processing (text) with graphics (including clip art) to complete the first step of publishing, and, with the addition of a laser printer, to produce newsletters, reports, brochures, newspaper advertising, etc.

Provides instruction in basic data entry in Lotus and dBASE III Plus. Uses ASCII to transfer documents from one program to another. Uses WordPerfect to produce practical integrated documents.

Provides an overview of the history of surgery and the role of the surgical technologists, including professional responsibilities, developing a professional resume, legal and ethical considerations, interpersonal relationships and communication skills. Incorporates safety, hazards preparation, aseptic technique and duties of the scrubbed and the circulating surgical technologist during a surgical procedure. Provides information for the performance and completion of surgical procedures including general surgery, ob/gyn with attendant specialty equipment, abdominal incisions, wound closures, and standard precaution skills.

ALH122 (Grade of C or Higher), BIO171 (Grade of C or Higher), BIO172 (Grade of C or Higher), and BIO265 (Grade of C or Higher)

Provides opportunity for demonstration of skills required to prepare the patient, operating room, basic equipment, and supplies; and to function as a member of an operating room team. Incorporates OSHA safety standards, aseptic technique, and duties of both the scrubbed and circulating technologist during a surgical procedure.
