ENGL 229: Foundations in Creative Writing

A writing-intensive course that increases student understanding of language and the writing process through an exploration of forms of creative writing. Topics may include various genres including poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. An emphasis will be placed on: the value of original imaginative content; effective methods for offering feedback; incorporating such feedback in meaningful revision; line-by-line editing; and the development of a signature style. Course work will include concentrated writing assignments, readings, discussions, and in-class workshops. Credit will not be given for both ENGL 224 and 229.

ENGL 114, ENGL 115, or HONR 106

The course provides an introduction to film and to the fundamentals of how it communicates as an art form and a cultural medium. Screenings in the course are chosen to emphasize the variety of narrative film by including literary adaptations of fiction and drama, classical American movies, foreign-language films, and examples of independent and silent cinema. The course aims to help students acquire skills of watching and responding that will enable them to become more knowledgeable and perceptive viewers, more aware of how movies work to shape our ideas about life and social experience. This course satisfies a Category B general education requirement.
