ASL 101: American Sign Language I

This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This course is designed for students with no or minimal sign language skills to develop basic skills in use of ASL and knowledge of Deaf culture. Emphasis is upon acquisition of comprehension, production and interactional skills using basic grammatical features. ASL will be taught within contexts and related to general surroundings and everyday life experiences.

This course is designed for students who seek to enhance the knowledge and skills they developed in American Sign Language I (ASL 101). The course helps students to refine their understanding of individual signs and short conversations. Opportunities will be provided for students to acquire new vocabulary, enhance their understandings of core grammatical features, develop their receptive and expressive language skills, and learn to sign popular ASL stories. Students will continue to learn about the etymology of signs, Deaf communities, and Deaf culture.
