This seminar will investigate a variety of journeys by Americans and will include voyages of discovery in North America and throughout the world. Some of the journeys are primarily physical, such as Joshua Slocum’s Sailing Alone Around the World. Others, such as Thoreau’ s Walden , are primarily intellectual explorations. Still others, such as Ralph Ellison? 痵 Invisible Ma n, Paule Marshall ’s Praisesong for the Wid ow, and Tom Wolf e’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid T est, are “searches for self” that combine physical and intellectual wande rings.
