The course aims to enhance students' abilities for speaking accurately and appropriately in increasingly challenging situations, reading and understanding narrative and descriptive texts and the relevant cultural aspects, writing short narrative paragraphs with proper discourse connectors, and conversing on a wider range of personal topics with some sophistication. This course includes recognition and production of 500 characters. Students should have control of a cumulative total of 850 characters by the end of the term. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 0002 This course is offered at least once a year.

Goals of this course is to enhance a greater understanding of East Asian cultures and to explore the interactions and relationships between the peoples and cultures of East Asian (China, Japan, and Korea) and the rest of the world, from ancient times to the present. Literary works, memoires, autobiographies, diaries, historical records, and films will be used. Themes involve such topics as the significance of travel in self-understanding, diaspora, immigration, and changing ideas of the homeland.

This is a two-term course designed to prepare graduate students as well as students with the equivalent of 3 years of Chinese in the various fields of Chinese studies at Pitt with a reading knowledge of materials written in classical and semi-classical style. The main focus of this course is on the grammar, syntax, and the particular vocabulary of classical Chinese. Comparison between classical Chinese and modern Chinese in these areas will also be dealt with in order to build a bridge between them as well as to teach the underlying coherence between them. The cultural and literary implications of classical Chinese will be discussed throughout the course in order to provide the students not only with the linguistic knowledge of classical Chinese, but the rich historical backgrounds implied in this particular style of Chinese.
