ASIA 497A: Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology
3.00 Credits
Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus
This course addresses the connections between the disciplines of linguistics and anthropology. That is, we examine the concepts of "culture" and "cultural practices" as revealed through ethnographic research methods. We begin with an overview of the field itself and the history of its development into an academic discipline. The research papers assigned for the course center on methods of qualitative inquiry that combine linguistics with ethnography of face-to-face communication, conversation analysis, and discourse analysis. With an appeal to these approaches, we explore how members of speech, discourse, and socio-cultural communities within the US and in international contexts construct and embody culture through languages and interaction, from greetings to ceremony and ritual.
