    Teachers will update their skills in the physical sciences by participating in hands-on science activities appropriate for use in elementary and middle school classrooms. Activities will focus on investigations, which can be integrated with commercial science texts and/or be integrated with math and language arts activities. The use of readily available, safe materials will be emphasized throughout the course. Recommended for elementary and middle school science educators.

    In this workshop, teachers become familiar with and analyze the mathematical aspects of games, puzzles, parlor tricks, geometrical constructions, and other interesting areas of recreational mathematics. They will also discuss ways of presenting mathematical games in the classroom in a way to enhance student interest in mathematics. Recommended for K-12 math educators.

    An examination of related research, learning theory, and the wisdom of practice for middle level education. Emphasis will be on participants learning through experience and activities which have practical application for their own individual educational environment. Workshop focus will be active learning and reflection. Evaluation will be performance-based. Interdisciplinary teaching, scheduling, performance assessment, student advising, developmental issues, multiple intelligence, motivation, diversity, inclusion, classroom management, and parental involvement will be addressed.     With the advent of Web 2.0 applications, teachers have new opportunities for collaborating with one another, communicating with the community and educating students. The terms Web 2.0 and emergent technology refer to a host of online resources and applications that support sharing of information between users. The web has evolved from a series of static, isolated pages of information into an interactive, collaborative, social network of applications. This workshop provides educators with a comprehensive look at different emergent technology and how these Web 2.0 applications can be used to promote student learning.

    Design, construction, and evaluation of classroom assessment methods and materials are the object of this workshop. The workshop features hands-on practice in clarifying objectives; developing assessment blueprints; constructing objective tests; writing prompts and rubrics for assessing writing, performances, and performance products; writing prompts for self-reflection and affective-domain objectives; and creating portfolio assignments. Other topics covered include principles of sound assessment, choosing appropriate assessment tools, helping poor test takers, analyzing objective test results to improve test items, assessing the validity and reliability of assessment techniques, and selecting a published assessment instrument. Students experience many of the concepts covered by creating their own portfolio of assessment tools, engaging in self-reflection, and using classroom assessment techniques. Recommended for 6-12 educators.

    The NCTM standards (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) recommend increased attention be given to the instructional practice of using manipulative materials in grades K-4 and using concrete materials in grades 5-8. Teachers will leave this workshop with concrete materials, which they have made to help in teaching the key concepts of elementary school mathematics. They will be instructed on how to make and use the materials most effectively in their classroom. Intended for elementary and middle schoolteachers and administrators, especially those instructing special education students and students who have difficulties in learning/applying mathematics. Recommended for elementary and middle school math educators.

    This workshop provides teachers with skills in identifying classroom discipline problems, applying instructional/management strategies designed to prevent or correct these problems, and employing strategies to maintain desired classroom atmosphere. After an overview of approaches to discipline and their underlying principles, teachers will be encouraged to choose guidelines, strategies, and patterns which will lead toward student self-control. Recommended for K-12 educators.

    This workshop explores how and why children's and adolescents' ethical values and attitudes evolve. Various theories of ethical development and ethical decision-making are examined and evaluated. Teachers of all grade levels, K-12, have an opportunity to survey available moral development materials and develop their own materials for classroom use. Practice in techniques such as discussion group management and utilizing role-playing will be provided. Recommended for K-12 educators.

    In districts across the state, teachers are encountering new tools for use in their classrooms. With new instructional technologies such as wireless laptops and interactive whiteboards, teachers have the ability to create lessons that promote new means of interacting with students instructionally. This face-to-face workshop is intended to help teachers manage new instructional technologies within the existing classroom yet create a collaborative culture that fosters collaboration.

    This workshop is for teachers of elementary, middle, and junior high school students who want to learn how to use practical, uncomplicated approaches to the teaching of written communication. Among the topics will be: (1) the fundamentals of a writing program, (2) creating a variety of audiences, (3) the interrelationships of oral and written communication, (4) activities which support writing and speaking programs, (5) private and public writing activities, (6) overcoming the paper load, and (7) basic steps to a successful program. This workshop serves teachers of all subject areas.
