Introduction to terminology and cultural areas of the world. General introduction to the study of world music, the ethnomusicological approach and classification and symbolism of musical instruments. The process of musical innovation and acculturation in the world, and the impact of technology and the communications media on contemporary musical styles of non-European cultures. Topics include the music of South and West Africa, Ethiopia and folk music of the Arabic. Near East, the classical music of Iran and Asia, and the musical cultures of North and South India.
Prerequisite:
COMM 100, ENGL 110 and junior status. Offered periodically.
