Provides an introduction to the structures and aesthetics of common-practice harmony for music majors and minors. Review of elements of pitch and rhythm and progresses to the introduction of triadic harmony, as well as figured bass realization. This course will investigate the harmonization of melodies and harmonic progressions through a wide range of activities. Musical materials to be studied will include selected multicultural folk music and art music examples. The study of music will be done through singing, ear training, improvisation, composition, analyses and keyboard performances.
