WLD 296: SMAW and Applied Fundamentals

This course is designed for students in the Sheet Metal Apprentice program. Students learn shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) applications to light gauge carbon steels. Fundamentals of the SMAW process and applications for the sheet metal industry are discussed. Students learn the process of inspection and maintenance of equipment and minor repairs. Extensive hands-on practice of SMAW welding is performed by the student.

Students learn the application of the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process as it applies to the industrial, food service and ornamental metal industries. Students perform work on both aluminum and stainless steel and apply hands-on basic welding skills to applications which require much more discipline and advanced techniques.

Use of advanced techniques for both gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) processes are covered. American Welding Society (AWS) welding and certification testing procedures are explained and practiced.
