SWK 6107: Violence In Society
1.00 Credits
Yeshiva University
Violence has been with us since Cain slew Abel and always will be. However, because some periods of history are more violent than others, and some countries have fewer suicides and murders than their neighbors, we know that violence can be contained and reduced. This seven-session mini course will explore various types of violence, including sociosyntonic killings, such as dueling, "honor killings", and killing in the line of duty; violence to the Self, such as cutting and suicide; volence to the family; and ideologically or religiously motivated murders such as domestic terrorism and cult killings. We will review beliefs and theories of violence, beginning with Durkheim's conceptualization of egoistic suicide. Particular attention will be paid to theories involving violence in response to shame, and the use of restorative justice and an intervention. Using a macro-theory of displaced and undischarged shame, students will write a final paper of about 12 pages, describing a violent crime reconstructed frome the news media; analyze it from the displaced shame perspective; and describe how it might have been contained or prevented.
