Contemporary Political Ideologies analyzes the rise of the mass public as a political force beginning with the democratic state in the 19th century and transformed by 20th century totalitarianism. Political ideologies are belief systems used to moblize the masses toward specific political objectives. The course focuses on modern nationalism since Renan and its relationship to globalization, the evolution of modern liberalism, conservatism and socialism in the democratic state as well as non-democratic ideologies like that of Political Islam today. Emphasis is given to the historical context of these ideologies as well as to the psychological ramifications of the "true believer" (Eric Hoffer).
