A close reading of selected works by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) and Walt Whitman (1819-1892) in order to see how the widely accepted notion of American individualism is in fact a cultural movement away from the authority and structure of collective life inherent in Church, State and Family. Contesting the authority of these institutions, our three :prophetic" voices - representing different vocations, spheres, and legacies (religious, intellectual, poetic) - created literary forms an "imperial self" in its stead.
