Based on ancient authors, the courses in Latin are designed to foster a reading knowledge of classical Latin while developing an appreciation of the culture and achievements of ancient Rome. Attention is paid to Latin's influence on English as well as to the sound of Latin. This course explores contemporary French culture and society through the art and language of French cinema. It includes a study of women and gender issues through the major trends ("nouvelle vague") and genres offilms (historical, literary, popular, political) since the end of World War II. Films by such directors as Duras, Lelouch, Truffaut, Resnais, and others are screened in French with English subtitles. The course may be taken as LFRN 209D for French credit or LLIT 209D as a valid substitute for ENGL 150C (102C), if needed, and as a course toward the Women and Gender Studies minor.
