Prerequisite: At least one 300- or 400-level History class from a concentration area pertinent to the research project.

Explores works of literature that incorporate legend and lore through their retelling of the past, both historical and fictional. Focuses on the literary, historical, and cultural origins of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Reading of the trilogy as well as some medieval texts. Studying the history of Britain in its earliest centuries to understand the influences on Tolkien's work. Some attention to the author's life and scholarly work. Prerequisite: Read The Fellowship of the Ring.
