WGST 101 is designed to introduce students to the academic study of the relationship between gender roles and power. By examining the topic from a variety of disciplinary perspectives-social, literary, historical, and scientific-students gain an insight into the degree to which gender is a biological fact of human existence and the degree to which gender is socially constructed. In addition, students investigate the effects of gender on the lives of men and women in diverse cultures and in contemporary American society, as well as the ways in which our understanding of gender has changed over time.
