Introduction to important events of German cultural history. Rather than sticking to the strict chronology of history, it introduces concepts that lend meaning to chronology in the first place. The course is built around ideas-religion, language, literature, sports, for example-that make sense of the changing flow of events and yield historical narratives.

Prerequisites for the following 400-level courses: two courses chosen from L304, L305, L307, L308, L309, and L310 or the equivalent.

Jazz dance technique with an African American historical perspective. Instruction includes basic dance technique vocabulary andmovements with syncopated rhythmpatterns.

Explores the origin, nature, and history of life on Earth, prospects for life in our own and other planetary systems, extrasolar planet detection, and the possibility of other technological civilizations.

Open to summer Groups Programstudents only. Through amusical/theatrical piece chosen for study and performance, students are encouraged to explore and develop their abilities and to experience growth andmotivation that comes fromparticipating in a unified and motivating group experience.

Introduction to the physical universe. Topics include constellations, gravity, radiation, the Sun, structure and evolution of stars, neutron stars and black holes, the MilkyWay galaxy, normal galaxies, active galaxies, quasars, cosmology, and the search for extraterrestrial life. Credit given for only one of A105 or A110. I Sem., II Sem., SS.
