hours. An introduction to research methods in African and African American studies. Topics will include bibliography, editing, survey design and implementation, and exercises intended to familiarize the student with various research sources, tools, and databases. Prerequisites: completion of 18 hours in African and African American studies, including 113, 212, 222, 312 for majors; completion of 113, 212, 222, and 312 for minors; non-majors and minors admitted by departmental permission only.

hours. The study of designated topics on African and African American subject areas. Topic and content to be arranged by faculty members involved. One or more topics may be offered in the same or alternate years.

hours. This course is a survey of the major concepts, definitions, and areas of study in African and African American studies. Major components of the African experience in the diaspora including the building of cultural groups, institutions, and new relationships will be discussed from an interdisciplinary perspective. A better understanding and appreciation of African-American history, social organization, creativity, psychology, religion, political participation, cultural institutions, and socio-economic and educational development will also be gained.

hours. A study of the music resulting from the duality of being Black and American. Includes work songs, spirituals, recreational songs, symphonic and other formal concert music, jazz, blues, rock, gospel, and miscellaneous songs. Selected readings, listening to both recordings and live performances, and a research paper on some social, cultural, or analytical aspect of music are required. hours. This course provides a sociological analysis of race and ethnic relations with particular attention to the United States. Specific topics to receive attention include: the concepts of race, ethnicity, minority, dominance, power, privilege, and inequality. Evolutionary, psychological, and sociological perspectives of race/ethnic relations will be examined. Prerequisites: Sociology 110 and junior/senior standing or consent of instructor. hours. The historical development of racial and national groups in the United States and their contributions to the American scene. (Also listed as History 437.)

hours. Explores the formation of feminist consciousness inclusive of race, sex, and class struggles of African and African American women in America. Focuses on the United States and supports the contemporary African and African American theory of womanism as the interconnectedness of identity as female and African American.

hours. This course examines the role of film in developing nations in Africa. The course looks at films from the African continent and deals with the ways that films made outside the dominant culture both reflect their own worlds and respond to views expressed in the dominant (Hollywood) cinema. hours. Major issues in the region’s historyfrom the beginning of European settlement through the nineteenth century, focusing on the evolution and demise of its defining slave-based culture that distinguished the region from the rest of America. (Also listed as History 426.)
