This course is intended for students who wish to extend an elementary or secondary teaching certification to the middle level. It focuses on theories and practices in the education of middle level students (grades 5-9). The historical and philosophical roots of various models of middle level education (i.e., middle schools, junior high, magnet schools) are addressed. Students will analyze middle school issues related to curriculum, instruction, management, grouping, assessment, diversity, the inclusion of special needs students at the middle level, technology and staffing. This course is required of all students seeking secondary school teaching certification; includes placement of approximately 7 weeks each in grades 7-9 and 10-12, under the guidance and supervision of cooperating teacher and a College supervisor. Final evaluation consists of the demonstration of competencies and teacher roles listed in the Secondary Teacher Student Handbook. Prerequisites: required GPA's (2.75 in major and in education courses, 2.25 overall); grade of C or better in every required education course; EPY 244, 350; EDU 365, either 368 or 266; Secondary School Methods; substance abuse, child abuse, and HIV/AIDS workshop requirements. This culminating field course is a one-semester, full-time experience that includes placements at two grade levels: 1-3 and 4-6. Students are required to demonstrate competencies as indicated in the Handbook for Teacher Education Department. Prior to student teaching, students complete an 18-hour field experience in each of their placements that involves a thorough analysis of home, school and community composition and dynamics, which is done under the supervision of the College of Saint Rose student teaching supervisor. Application must be made by February 1 for the Fall semester; by October 1 of the preceding Fall semester for a Spring student teaching placement. Prerequisites: good standing in the School of Education; required GPAs (2.75 in education; 2.25 in academic concentration; 2.5 overall); grade of C or better in every education course; completion of education sequence, violence prevention, substance abuse, child abuse, and HIV/AIDS workshop requirements. This course is designed to provide support during the student teaching semester. In-service about specific topics relating to the teaching profession is provided. Topics are selected to support and complement the student teaching experience. It is a pass/fail course which allows opportunities for the student teacher to come together with colleagues and the instructor to discuss issues that relate to teaching as a profession in general, as well as those that relate to individual classroom situations. Tis course gives prospective teachers an opportunity to reflect critically on the profession and their role in the classroom, to explore alternatives, to consider consequences (intended and unintended) of various classroom actions, and to begin to assume responsibility for their own continuing professional development. Designed for students with a double major in elementary and special education. Must be taken with prior approval of heads of teacher and special education departments. Co- or prerequisites: specified conditions for EDU 490 and SED 480 apply. EDU Seminar in Secondary Education (3) The course explores topics and issues related to teaching in the middle and high school, including such topics as AIDS education, adolescent suicide, alternative curricula and at risk and exceptional students, classroom management and discipline, school-based and participatory management, shared decision-making, supervision and conferencing (teacher to supervisor, teacher to parent), unionization of professions, ethics and the law.
