The focus of learning in this course will be the established theories of counseling employed by professional counselors. Through lecture and readings, students will be exposed to prominent theorists and to the history and development of counseling and counseling theories. Particular attention will be given to the application of these theories to school, community and college settings. Students will be exposed to exemplary models of elementary, middle and secondary school counseling programs. Topics to be covered include: cultural diversity,developmental guidance, consultation, crisis intervention, behavior management, special education, parent education, peer counseling, career counseling and primary prevention. In addition, students will be required to make two site observations of school counselors working at different levels. Fall

This course will introduce students to the special issues related to counseling children and adolescents as well as to specific counseling strategies for this population. Students will be exposed to traditional approaches to working with children andadolescents such as play therapy, reality therapy and behavioral approaches. In addition, students will be exposed to more recent developments such as problem-solving approaches, anger management approaches and family counseling. This course will also focus on the developmental issues and problems that children and adolescents face.
