The purpose of the course is to explore the principles and procedures of the internal and performance audit. The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Auditor within the management team and organization are explored in detail. Topics covered include: the organization of the internal audit department, staff qualifications and development, long/short range audit plans, and the elements of internal auditing (e.g. preliminary survey audit programs, field work activities, report and management review)Applications and research will consider both the private and governmental sector. A survey of characteristics and comparative advantages of the major capital and money markets in the US and the world. An examination of the principles and practices of intermediation within the financial system. Topics include: international aspects of financial markets and institutions, pricing of assets and products, as well as the regulatory environment. Application of financial theory in the development of corporate policy is discussed. The course also examines the impact of recent developments in the international financial marketplace. Possible topics include: financing international trade and strategies toward foreign exchange risk. Prerequisite: BUS 301.

Intensive study of the various institutions composing the American financial system. Emphasis is on the managerial aspects of these institutions, the relationships among them, and the environments in which they operate. This includes evaluating financial statements and measuring performance, determining organization and structure, as well as management of sources of funds and asset/liability techniques. Students will solve management problems encountered in the business of providing financial services. Extensive use of case studies and presentation. Prerequisite: BUS 301.

Evaluation of the implications of the efficient markets theory for the profitability of alternative investment strategies. Focus is on generation and use of relevant data and valuation from the portfolio perspective. Topics include: security valuation principles and models, economic analysis, industry analysis, company analysis, and technical analysis. The course emphasizes both domestic and foreign investment opportunities. Discussion of recent developments in valuation and portfolio application, standards, regulation, and ethics. Students will practice portfolio construction, monitoring, and performance evaluation. Prerequisite: BUS 301.

A supervised business internship in organizations in the private and public sectors. This course provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable field experience in performing business/administration functions while developing their networking skills and cultivating their own network of professional contacts. Open to all majors, junior standing is strongly recommended, evidence of good writing skills required. Students may qualify for a business internship on the basis of having taken specific courses or having had learning experiences outside the classroom. See the Business Internship Director for further information. Prerequisites: BUS 310, 346; Career Center workshops on resume writing and interviewing; business index of at least 2.5; references from a full-time business faculty member and academic advisor; must have completed at least 60 credits by start of internship and at least one semester on campus at Saint Rose; application and screening interviews necessary.
