This course is designed to provide the student with principles and practices of classroom and student behavior management. Emphasis is placed upon those classroom management techniques that will enhance both individual and group learning in a safe and well-organized classroom environment. Interventions will be presented that assist the teacher in providing positive learning environments to support students' academic and social skills development. Specific attention to the development and implementation of functional behavioral assessment and intervention is provided in this course. A 21-hour field experience is required. One credit is earned through participation in, and implementation of class content within a field experience. Prerequisite or co-requisite: SED 146. Fall, Spring.

This course is designed to prepare students to develop and evaluate children's literacy in literature-based, functional contexts, in accordance with standards for the English Language Arts established by New York State and other professional organizations. Teaching approaches include inquiry, project work, collaborative learning, computer-assisted instruction, direct instruction, the literacy workshop, individual coaching, and the development of independent learning strategies and self-monitoring. Emphais is placed on developing optimal learning environments for all learners, developing early diagnosis and intervention strategies, using literature themes to promote the development of children's natural and functional use of language, and working with children in the larger family and societal context. Students develop integrated activities that involve listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Prerequisites: EPY 244, CMD 235. Open only to majors in the SEED program. Fall, Spring.
